Detox with Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs have been used since the beginning of time. I will be honest; they can be messy! (Keep reading for some tips on how to prevent this!).

They can be a super great addition to supporting healthy hormones by promoting better mineral and hormone levels by giving them a push in the right direction! We need good mineral balance to promote healthy production of hormones.

Castor oils packs can be a great tool to support your healing journey as they can have many benefits including the obvious one which is supporting detox but they can also be helpful in inducing a relaxed state and helping to reduce feelings of stress, support your gut, promote a healthy balance of good bacteria, promote regular bowel movements, ovaries, skin, blood circulation and can help reduce oxidative stress and so, help reduce inflammation.

One of the coolest things about castor oil is that it also contains quercetin which is a flavonoid (a powerful phytochemical) which can really help support hormones.

So, how do we ‘do’ a castor oil pack?

What you will need:

  • Organic, cold pressed, hexane free castor oil stored in a dark bottle, and stored out of sunlight.

  • Natural wool undyed flannel x 2 (to double up)

  • Something to tie it around your body to keep the flannels in place e.g., the tie from your robe or some sort of wrap!

or

  • A castor oil instead of using the flannels! (I sourced mine from CASTOPAK from Lulus naturals Store ( Organic Cotton core Connection Castor Wrap - Etsy UK ) It is so much easier! Always try to source organic cotton rather than bamboo. It takes a lot of toxic chemicals to break down bamboo into usable fibre.

It is worth bearing in mind that castor oil can be messy and cause stains! I love my CASTOPAK as it is mess free!

Method:

  • Place at least 2 tablespoons of castor oil on your cloth (the more the better) and place on your liver which is on the right side of your torso, beneath the diaphragm but on top of the stomach. Applying heat is optional. My Castopak keeps things pretty warm especially with my clothing on top! Absorption takes around 20 minutes. I would wear your pack for at least an hour, but some people sleep with them!

  • Simply, apply your pack and relax!

How often should you use a castor oil pack? The answer is as many times as you like. A few times a week is optimal! I would suggest doing them a few days in a row consecutively. Best practice is to avoid castor oil packs when pregnant due to the detoxification and risk of early labour, whilst breast feeding and it is also suggested to avoid during menstruation.

I hope this helps! Have you tried a castor oil pack yet? If not, will you be giving it a go? Let me know!
